Improving arguments for science policy dialogue: BESAFE second stakeholder meeting
20.05.2014

Timely and adequate actions to protect nature depend on better science-policy dialogue. To translate biodiversity arguments for the all users of such information the EU –funded FP7 project BESAFE has called together a number of key organizations and institutions at its second stakeholder workshop, 13 and 14 May 2014 (Brussels), to present the findings of its case studies and discuss the development of a new generation biodiversity argumentation toolkit for interactive and easy access to stakeholder-oriented information.

The BESAFE project investigates how effective different types of arguments for biodiversity protection (e.g. economic, ethical, intrinsic) are in different decision making contexts. To achieve this feedback from stakeholders is crucial to set the sails in the right direction. Representatives of a number of key organizations in biodiversity decision making were present at the event, including the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, RSPB, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee and the French ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy.

During the two day meeting different types of biodiversity arguments were discussed with stakeholders alongside their effectiveness in different circumstances. A stress was also put on the role of Ecosystem Services in argumentation. In a joint effort scientist and decision makers looked at defining effective argumentation for various governance levels based on results from the 12 project case studies.

BESAFE also introduced the project toolkit and web tool to explore ideas for unlocking the information to stakeholders. The toolkit aims to translate complex scientific information into easy to access and useful biodiversity arguments that will facilitate decision makers through the achievement of right actions.

The results from the meeting were summarised at a Final plenary, where future plans to further develop the database and web tool were presented with a stress on a more practical focus recommended by stakeholders.

All presentations from the workshop are available to view and download in our Policy User Corner (http://besafe.pensoft.net/page.php?P=45).
